Harsh Hunt: Lion Retrieves Unborn Animal from Antelope’s Womb in Pursuit

These images depict a disturbing scene of nature’s ruthlessness, yet they are also very emotional. When a lioness discovered that the antelope she killed was pregnant, she abandoned the unborn child, tried to revive it, and even protected and hid it as if it were her own cubs. The lioness even showed remorse for her actions, and the photographs are sure to spark a debate about animal behavior. The lioness discarded the unborn antelope and hesitated to harm a newborn. When the lioness got a hold of what she believed was her stomach, she started pulling it out.

However, when the lioness stood up for leverage, she discovered it was the fetus. The subsequent sights stunned everyone. After her mother’s departure, the lioness tenderly placed the fetus on the ground and spent much time sniffing and inspecting it. The lioness stopped eating, tried to push the fetus again, struggled to sleep, and eventually pulled the fetus into a thicket before galloping away. Her body language was unusual for a lioness in her circumstances, and it appeared that she was definitely concerned by what had just transpired, as she looked out for help.

After a while, she continued to eat and began to purge the contents of her stomach, presumably in an effort to keep the fetus at bay. But she quickly stopped eating and returned her attention to the fetus she had picked up with her nose very delicately. Then she stood there, with the fetus in her mouth, looking about in all directions as though inspecting something. After a few minutes, she began heading towards a thicket near where she had killed the antelope. She came to a halt once again and carefully laid the fetus on the ground, her face strained and scared.

She then nudged the fetus with her nose, softly curling it before raising it to the nape of her neck as if it were her own. She prodded it a couple more times with her nose, still gazing about it as if she was expecting help or danger.

She gently returned to the antelope’s body, where she stopped eating and instead gazed around before lying down and falling asleep. This is without a doubt one of the most astounding displays of lion behavior you will ever see. Is her mother’s instinct effective? Is there still a heartbeat to be felt?
