The incident was captured on video by tourist Cynthia Mack at Hwange National Park.
During her tour, Mack encountered a lone baby elephant limping towards a water hole. Unfortunately, due to its injuries, the elephant inadvertently stumbled into the sights of three young lions resting on a nearby mound.
When one of the lions approached, the baby elephant tried to intimidate the predator in a desperate attempt to escape. However, its efforts were futile.
Within minutes, the remaining two lions joined their accomplice to overpower and kill the young elephant. While a large male elephant attempted to come to the rescue, it quickly retreated upon realizing the baby elephant was unable to stand. The lions ultimately devoured their prey.
Lions are apex predators and primarily feed on other mammals, particularly medium to large ungulates.
Although elephants are the largest land animals and have formidable defenses, lions rarely hunt them for food in the wild. However, during times of drought, lions are forced to take the risk and hunt this massive prey.
